I haven't read your books, so I don't know whether it is suitable for you or not.
For me, I learned a little bit 8051 assembly and then started to learn keil c51.
It's not that difficult for me as I am a java programmer and have experiences on
c/c++ and java.
Recently, I started learning to write program under linux platform(fedora 9).
